Patatas con bonito = ¿“potatoes with beautiful”? es una de las aberraciones lingüísticas que mas encontramos en este tiempo donde las terrazas comienzan a abrir y el turismo empieza a llegar a Barcelona, no es de avergonzarse el no saber otro idioma e incluso haciendo uso de las herramientas como traductores y buscadores en vías de incrementar las ventas en una ciudad cosmopolita como lo es nuestra ciudad y el tener una carta en inglés es básico en algunas zonas de la capital catalana.

Llega a nuestro rescate la aplicación Babbel, la app que ayuda a hablar idiomas desde el principio, ha querido centrarse en la importancia de las correctas traducciones de menús, tanto para la imagen del propio restaurante como para la buena comprensión de los turistas. Para ello, ha desarrollado una guía rápida de traducciones al inglés de platos y bebidas populares de esas que enamoran a todo el mundo.

Por ejemplo, las traducciones como pimientos con bonito = peppers with beautiful (con el significado de que los pimientos están «llenos de belleza»), o mató con miel = killed with honey (es decir, quien pida el plato comerá algo que fue «matado con miel» o, peor aún, a un perpetrador que «mató con miel») no ayudan a que un extranjero se atreva a pedir algo diferente de lo que ya conoce: sangría y patatas bravas. También Juana Albert, propietaria del salón de té Vailima, comenta al respecto: «Si la carta está mal traducida, […] condena irremediablemente a los comensales extranjeros a pedir los platos que relacionen fácilmente, con nuestra cocina, limitando así la posibilidad de conocer a fondo nuestra cultura gastronómica».

Traducciones erróneas frecuentes y su forma correcta

–          pescado a la plancha -> fish to the iron

Correcto: grilled fish

–          pimientos con bonito -> peppers with beautiful

Correcto: si bien la traducción literal es “peppers with beautiful”, la forma correcta es  “red peppers filled with a type of tuna called “bonito”

–          pulpo á feira -> octopus to the party

Correcto: “party-style” o “Galician” octopus, boiled and dressed with salt, olive oil and paprika

–          mató con miel -> killed with honey

Correcto: literalmente se puede malinterpretar como killed with honey, pero la traducción correcta sería soft Catalonian cheese served with honey

–          vino en botella -> he/she came in bottle

Correcto: bottle of wine

–          pescado a la marinera -> seafarer’s fish

Correcto: la forma literal sería “seafarer’s fish”, pero una buena traducción añadiría a fillet of fish topped with calamari, prawns and other sea food.

Café con leche, cortado, café solo, café largo

Coffee with milk, espresso with a splash of warm milk, single espresso, long black coffee (an americano)

–          Patatas:

Patatas bravas, patatas con allioli / alioli

Potatoes in a spicy sauce, potatoes with garlic mayonnaise

–          Vinos:

Vino en botella, vino en copas

Bottle of wine, glasses of wine

Vino tinto, blanco, rosado

Red, white and rosé wine

–          Pescados:

Pescado a la plancha – grilled fish

Pulpo a la gallega / pulpo á feira – “party-style” or “Galician” octopus, boiled and dressed with salt, olive oil and paprika.

Pescado a la marinera – “seafarer’s fish”, a fillet of fish topped with calamari, prawns and other sea food.

–          Tapas:

Tortilla de patatas – Spanish potato omelette

Pimientos con bonito – red peppers filled with a type of tuna called “bonito”!

Croquetas – fried potato croquettes, often with cheese and ham

Ensaladilla rusa – Russian salad, made with potatoes, carrots, peas, eggs, vinegar, oil and sometimes tuna…

–          Postres:

Mató con miel – soft Catalonian cheese served with honey

Profiteroles – true friend, profiteroles are international!

Macedonia – fruit salad
